Additional Notes on Historic Fowler Summit

Well, you've got tim's fuller version here, and I must say there isn't very much to quibble with, but my own two cents to go with it:

1) Like Stevie Wonder would say, "just like Ah pictured it." Take the town of Brush up my way (albeit 100 miles east on Rt. 34), make a right on Route 71, go 150 miles south, and you have a duplicate of it in Fowler. Just don't blink, or you'll miss it. (And compared to anything else between Pueblo and LaJunta, it's a hoppin' burb.)

2) Never have I seen so much gratitude expressed by so many over a c.1979 Radio Shack cassette recorder with fake-wood trim. But hey, I'm glad it works, guys.

3) It's really, really pointless to try to maintain a low-carb diet in a town comprised of two convenience stores. But I'll get back on track.

4) Despite implications (intended or not) by non-attendants elsewhere, discussions of God often flowed freely, if respectfully. And as declared by one of those actually in attendance, it sure seems like He's always weaving in and out of the scenery whether the other one of those in attendance wants to acknowledge it or not.

5) Camille is one small but kick-butt cat.

6) Make that two speedfreaks, one of whom would've turned entirely alcoholic as well had he not pulled off the road when he did. (See also #s 4 & 7.)

7) A bit more clarity on the "George Bailey" comment: As person after person walked through the doors of the Quickee Mart (and on the street, for that matter) -- and let's not forget tim's own fire testimony from a couple weeks back -- it became abundantly clear that, in this town of 800, there's really only one person who hates tim.

Thing is, the skinny 52-year-old kid lives with him, sleeps with him, yada yada. No big secret in that latter half, but still....

And still-er (not Ben, nor Jerry), drummer Dan's testimony on tim's behalf just before I left pretty much summed up how it appears everyone else feels about him. I arguably felt jealous. Anyway, boy just needs to receive it.

Ah says, RECEIVE it, son!

8) Like I told tim at the time, SOMEone had to step up and do those back-ups on "Slamming Door Repeats." Neblung can reassume his rightfully place next year. (Actually, I did them too, didn't I? I always thought of it as Rick's.... probably 'cause I was looking at him while he was looking at me.....)

9) Playing bass hurts when you haven't done it for 10+ years. But I wear my blister as a badge of pride.

10) There's other things as well, but I've been sworn to secrecy and I'm'a respecting that.

Kind of like an Invisible Man has been giving quite a bit of evidence all along. Maybe more than enough, even.

Is there a link to "Slamming Door Repeats" so that I can hear what all of the fuss is about? :-b

Sadly, no. And if tim doesn't offer any Envelopes stuff as downloads, he's probably lost it in the fire and needs a fresh CD from me. I think he's still trying to figure out who's got copies of what and reconstituting, but obviously I'll help on this end.

So, all I can offer are the lyrics (and to mention that the bass riff played behind the song in G is largely stolen from Bob Seger's "Against the Wind":

Do you see -- where the feelings fail
Do you feel -- like yr heart's in jail
In the dark -- of these London streets
I walk out -- slamming door repeats
And here I am
Freezing in my hotel room (over you)
Bleeding from an open wound
And it's hard
But it's harder still
When y'r in love.

Once we talked -- 'bout the newest dance
Tell me why o why is the present tense
I've been told, I can't touch you how
I want to -- God, I need you now
And I'm freezing in my hotel room (over you)
Bleeding from an open wound
But it's hard -- enough -- holding on
To the real
To the core
Bleeding hearts never doubt (everybody dance now)

Once I thought -- I would die for you
But that alone, no, wouldn't prove to you
How it felt -- when our eyes waved goodbye
Couldn't feel that much worse than dying

Why'd I have to be so slow?
Why'd you have to be so kind?
How could I have let you go?
How could I have been that blind?
And I'm freezing in my hotel room over you
Bleeding from an open wound
And it's hard
But it's harder still
When y'r in love.

(you really need the solo, among other things, to fully appreciate it, but at least one can perceive the lyrical merit....)

True; its nice and easy to understand. A somewhat universal sentiment.

Did it get any local airplay, or was it just a club circuit favorite?

Ill have to dig out the CD that Byrnes made for me a while back; maybe its on there, but I think I would have remembered the title.

Hey!

Now wouldn't that be something if my copy of some of Byrnes stuff, is the only copy available?

Hmmm. Alright, Tim; let's talk Baltimore Catechism. Mwaa-ha ha ha ha!!!!!

"...like cheap paint on tarnished metal" is part of the opening lyric.

That song done solo by Byrnes is the only trace oF Tension Envelopes
on the CD he made me. He introduced is as a "song by the legendary New Jersey club band, Tension Envelopes", so that's how I know.

But none of the other songs start with "Do yo see where the feelings fail."

I'm really sorry that the CD is not in very good condition at all (the legacy of every CD that I bring downstairs with a bunch of kids all too happy to take out my CDs, throw them wherever they want, and put on their own preferred CDs); otherwise I would be happy to send the CD to Tim.

Is there any magic way out there of getting rid of the snap, crackle, and pop of a damaged CD? I already cleaned it with water and paper towels the best I could.

And if I could find the case, I would be able to tell you the songs on it; but I looked around good, and it probably ain't going to show up anywhere soon. :-b

But it does say "Bits and Pieces Live at Pompton Lakes" by Tim Byrnes, on it. Not sure if those are two separate titles, or just one title. Probably if I had the case handy, I could tell.

Just let me know if either of you want me to send you the copy; just promise to burn one for me, since I did shell out ten bucks for it, ...

and I kinda like it.

I'm guessing that's the punkrockblues collection. I have the "masters" (including CDs of the original tapes they were culled from), so no need to part with them.

The song referenced above is "Answer for Yr Own Good." There might've been a couple other songs that were done with the Envelopes as well -- I don't have it here at work, but I'm thinking at least "Playland" and "No Man's Uniform" are on that too -- but yes and alas, "Slamming Door Repeats" didn't have a solo version. Nor our other signature song, "Danny Miller." Nor the show-stoppers "Car Actor Actor" and "St. Anne." Nor.... well, you get the idea....

Now you're bashing Seger too, Tim? What do you have against all of us folks form the Detroit area anyways?

Yeah, but that's Detroit, where "urban renewal" comes in the form of arson. And I've been there, so don't tell me I'm wrong. :P (Although there is that one park on the south side that's actually rather nice. Can't remember the name anymore.)

Tim in fact has a much deeper sense of affinity for St. Clair Shores, since Patti & Fred Smith had made their home there for a dozen or so years, and my dad goes to church there and tim's only poked modest fun at him in the past. :P

"Yeah, but that's Detroit, where 'urban renewal' comes in the form of arson. And I've been there, so don't tell me I'm wrong. "

That's whre I work and drive home through every day. I drive literally within 10 feet of Comerica Park every day and then take a shortcut through the backstreets to I-75. So i know about the urban decay.

Is Belle isle the prak you were thinking of? Not sure if that's closed now or not.

Or it may have been another park, whose name I don't know, where my three daughters' team (The Ss. Cyril and Methodius Sharks) won a four-day Ressurection Softball Tournament last week. (Thus taking away a little bit of the sting of the Tigers's dismal start).

"(Although there is that one park on the south side that's actually rather nice. Can't remember the name anymore.)"

If it was on Connor/Clairmount after you pass Jefferson St. that might be the one.

If its St. Clair Shores, then it must be "New Life" Church. Because every evangelical I know who goes to chuch in St. Clair Shores, goes to New Life.

"...and let us not forget Iggy!"

I couldn't name you one of his songs, But I remember David Bowie once said that while most other bands liked to cover Chuck Berry, he liked to cover Iggy Pop the most.

Maybe someday if I get what the fuss about Bowie is, then I might appreciate what all the fuss about Iggy Pop is. But the only Bowie I ever had was "Let's Dance", and I ain't too motivated to go beyond that. "Space Oddity" is a tune I like to hear every ten years or so though; that's a good one.

Other than that, wam bam, no thank you, ma'am.

Respectively:
1) Yes, I think it was Belle Isle. Had some nice botanical gardens, fountains, etc.

2) Last I heard, it was called St. Clair Shores Assembly of God. But that might've changed. Sounds like they've had their ups and downs, but last I heard they still had several hundred.

3) Yes, getting Bowie would help one get Iggy. And "Let's Dance" sure wouldn't help THAT. Ziggy Stardust is considered the "classic" Bowie album, but there's at least half a dozen better (tim may well disagree, but this is MY blog :P). Maybe you just want to find a cheap copy of one of the compilations and go from there -- Bowie was a lot like Colorado weather: If you don't like it, wait another album, because he'll reinvent himself yet again. :)

4) But oh yes, Iggy. You've heard "Lust for Life," even if you didn't know it -- think those cruise ship commercials, where someone who sounds like the Animals trying to sound like the Stones (the early good version) growls "Lesssss go laaaavvve..." over some kickin' drums. You've likely heard "Wild One" from his comeback era as well ("Ah'm a real waaahld...child..."). His signature song would probably be "I Wanna Be Yr Dog," but I won't vouch for yr hearing of that. The only album I have is The Stooges' Raw Power, but I like that one a lot.

Hmmm, none of that Iggy sounds familiar. I'll have to dig out some of those downloads you mentionedsometime to see if I recognize them.

Yeah, Slamming Doors' is on In Yo Face and the Showplace show only and I never got those online. The best Iggy, IMHO, is the 1st Stooges record called simply 'the Stooges'. Neblung loved the reunion record but what little I heard made me cringe.

I hope that those things that I've heard of Iggy doing on stage are urban legends, like the stuff about Jim Morrison and Alice Cooper are.

On a semi-related note: How's that fire in Ordway affecting you guys, tim? It was weird hearing about that last night and realizing I was in that exact spot when I was phoning you (and Marion just before that) and saying I'd be at yr place in 10-15 minutes....

Ordway's been a trip. I knew one of the firefighters that died and some friends lost vehicles and stuff. I think at least 7 families lost everything which is a horror I hate anyone to have to endure. I'm trying to organize a benefit show w/Flashback and some other area musicians but so far just a lot of good intentions when what we need is a bar. More to follow.

Oh, and everything written aboutr Iggy is true, even though he is (was) an urban legend.
